Learning Environment

The classroom’s learning environment plays an important role in the student’s academic success. The teacher must be able to set up a space that is efficient, welcoming, and an engaging classroom to provide students with the best learning environment possible. The classroom needs to be a favorable place for teachers to deliver instruction and support students while they work to master content knowledge.  It is crucial for teachers to be able to create a positive learning environment which can be accomplished through clear procedures, cooperative learning, and incorporating and welcoming diversity.

Procedures

An efficient learning environment can be attained by keeping distractions to a minimum and providing structure to maximize instructional time. I use classroom rules and consistent procedures to achieve a well-managed learning environment. The rules  and procedures provide structure to help students be able to focus on mastering the content by minimizing distractions. It is important to introduce and start implementing the rules and procedures on the first day; so students can understand my expectations and their role in the classroom.

Cooperative Learning

Students can be seen in pairs at their desks.

By grouping students and implementing cooperative learning strategies, teachers can create a positive and helpful learning environment. In the classroom, students can work individually, in pairs, or in small groups. Using various grouping strategies allows for the teacher to circulate and help students in one-on-one settings or in small groups. Grouping students also facilitates cooperative learning because they must work together to solve problems. In my class, there were two students at each desk. In their pairs, they could work together and help each other master the topic. The setup also made it easy to transition into small groups because students could simply turn around to become a group of four. I has students work in small groups when they were completing a study guide for the classification unit.

Students are working in a group of three to complete a study guide.

Diversity

It is important to design an inclusive classroom where students’ needs can be met to create a welcoming learning environment. Teachers must be accepting to the diversity of their students which may include language, culture, race, and special needs. Teachers who can make their students feel valued will have the most success when it comes to students meeting their academic goals.  To try and meet the diversity in my classroom, I differentiate my lessons to meet my students’ needs on their academic levels. I created a text set for the evolution unit that allows all the students access to the material at their appropriate reading and academic levels.
