Professional Knowledge

Aspiring teachers must have professional knowledge to ensure they have a deep understanding of their content area and can provide students with adequate instruction. Teachers with a mastery pedagogy will be able to develop and deliver interesting lessons to effectively share their knowledge with the students. To demonstrate my professional knowledge, I have provided my scores from the Praxis II and VCLA, the transcripts from my undergraduate work, and a brief description of my educational memberships.

Examinations

To obtain licensure, the Virginia Department of Education requires all teachers to pass the Virginia Communication and Literacy Assessment and the Praxis II in their content area. My score on the VCLA supports that I can efficiently communicate, be it with students, parents, or administration. My high Praxis II score attests to my deep understanding of the topics covered in biology.

Higher Education

The education classes I have taken at Hollins University have given me the necessary skill set to run a professional classroom. The fieldwork I have completed throughout my course work helped me define my own teaching style to best teach and relate to my students.

Professional Memberships

Being a part of educational memberships is an important part of professional knowledge. As a member, I receive updates of upcoming conferences, new teaching strategies, and findings from the research in education. Through my memberships at the Virginia Education Association (VEA) and National Science Teacher Association (NSTA), I can continuously grow as an educator.  The NSTA gives science teachers opportunities to connect with each other to share ideas and knowledge.
